3 Reasons Why You Should Have Your First Look Before the Ceremony

Traditionally, many couples will wait until the wedding ceremony to see each other for the first time. However, many newly weds are breaking this tradition and having their first look before the ceremony. What does this look like? Is this something that you want to do?

Here are some of my thoughts on first looks – what they are, and why you should consider it.

What should I expect in a first look before the ceremony?

First looks before the ceremony will vary depending on the location and the couple. It could be outside in a park, beside a waterfall or on the roof of a building. There’s absolutely no rules… except, no peeking :)

Usually, the groom is positioned with his back towards bride. Then, the bride will walk up to the groom and get him to turn around. They have their special moment and the photographer and videographer will get some great candid shots of the couple interacting with each other. Generally, the photographer and/or the videographer will help set up and stage the couple, but after that, the couple runs the show.

Why Should you consider it?

  1. It gives you a moment to slow down and enjoy your action-packed day.

Weddings are busy and they can have their stressful moments. There’s sometimes a lot to think about and keep track of. Having your first look before the ceremony can give you a moment to breathe and be present with each other.

  2. The photographers and videographers will get some amazing shots with authentic reactions.

Being a wedding videographer, first looks are always a highlight of my day; it’s when I get my best shots. I will usually include it in the highlight video and I offer a first look film that captures the whole moment. If possible, I’ll mic up the groom so it can pickup his reaction and your conversation. This allows the couple to relive their first look forever.

  3. You can be yourselves.

The only staging that the photographer or videographer will do is tell the couple where to begin. After that, it’s just being yourself. The best piece of advice I can give you is to make sure that the only people present for your first look is your photographer and videographer. I know you might think it would be nice for family and friends to see this moment, but most of us will act differently around our friends than we do our partners.

There’s my 3 reasons on why you should consider doing a first look before your wedding ceremony. I completely understand that for many families and cultures, having the first look down the aisle is very important. But, if you have the chance, I’d highly recommend that you have your first look take place before the ceremony.
